This issue of OWAC Outdoors brings some important news for each member of the organization.

We are very fortunate to have Jennifer Berry, representing Zapwater Communications, join OWAC as a Supporting Member. Jennifer brings years of outdoor communications experience and says about her group:

“Zapwater Communications is an integrated communications agency with offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami.  Our Los Angeles office represents destinations and hotels throughout the west (and around the world) with a wide range of outdoor travel interests. A few of particular interest to OWAC include La Paz and Loreto in Baja California Sur (sportfishing, SCUBA, kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, sailing, and more,) Jungfrau Railways and Grindelwald, Switzerland (year-round mountain adventures including hiking, mountain biking and skiing) and Finland (Nordic adventures such as skiing, hiking, ice fishing, reindeer herding and many more.)”

“Our team shares a culture that fosters creativity and recognizes quality, productivity, collaboration and enthusiasm, and our campaigns generate excitement with original tactics designed to move the business needle through media relations, social media, strategic partnerships, events and influencer marketing.”

“We look forward to collaborating with OWAC’s members to share information and experiences featuring our clients’ rich roster of outdoor activities.” You may reach out to Jennifer at [email protected]

Another very talented young lady with excellent writing skills has joined OWAC this past month as a professional member. Helena Guglielmino works as a freelance writer and is a former OWAC intern. Reach Helena at [email protected]

After months of effort each of the venues in discussion for the Fall 2022 OWAC Conference have expressed their desire to withdraw from consideration for the present time. Now on to Spring! Members are encouraged to send a note to me here at [email protected] with any viable contacts that might be well served by hosting our Spring 2023 conference.

Over the years many individuals have received the Californian of the Year Award bestowed by election of OWAC membership. Covid, and changes to the program, have seen the prestigious honor go unclaimed for a few years. OWAC member Laurie Morrison has stepped up to take the reigns of the newly revamped program. With the help of Board Members Barbara Steinberg and Peter Schroeder, the program is ready to roll out for 2022 with a new name and acronym: Outdoor Californian of the Year, OCOY. Be sure to watch for announcements coming to your inbox very soon.

Bob Semerau

The many years I have spent running my own business gives me a unique perspective on managing projects and creating effective programs. Coupled with the ten years I have been writing for Western Outdoor News these experiences have allowed me a set of skills perfectly suited for the OWAC Board of Directors. During my tenure as OWAC Vice President we have achieved substantial progress in the way OWAC operates and how we serve our membership. These contributions have been some of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of my professional life. The further development of the craft awards program, working with each successive chair person, is among the many progressive developments I have accomplished as a volunteer on the OWAC Board. My interest in making OWAC work better, adding value both professionally and personally for each member, is the driving force behind my desire to stay aboard and complete initiatives recently begun. I seek your vote for re-election to the board so I may further the cause of OWAC and its membership and help it to continue to build as a unique, and outstanding, professional organization.
