OWAC Announces 4th Annual High School Writing and Photography Scholarships
By Peter Schroeder
For the fourth year, Outdoors Writers Association of California will sponsor writing and photography scholarships open to all Junior and Senior students at California high schools. The scholarships are based on the writing and photography submitted by the students. Cash awards and certificates of achievement will be presented to top winners in all categories.
Entrants also receive constructive feedback about their work from the judges, who are professional journalists and photographers from OWAC. The scholarships and critiques aim to encourage high school students to continue using their talents to communicate the beauty and opportunities of the outdoors, and to explore outdoor writing/photography as possible careers.
Known as the Pat Vachini Outdoor Writing and Photography Scholarships, the awards were established in memory of the wife of Don Vachini, long-time OWAC member and one of California’s foremost outdoor writers and photographers.
“Nature is healing, as more and more people discovered during the pandemic. Now, they want to continue enjoying parks and outdoor recreation,” says Bob Semerau, OWAC Executive Director.
The contest covers a wide range of subjects related to the outdoors, from prose to poetry and photography. Details are on the OWAC website: www.OWAC.org .
