Pismo/Oceano: Surf, Sand, Sun, and Sealife
By Del Albright
There’s something deeply soothing about the Central Coast of California—especially when you can explore the seashore for miles, feel the ocean breeze on your face, and sink your toes in the sand. Recently, Stacie and I spent a memorable day at Pismo State Beach, soaking in the surf, spotting wildlife, and enjoying the salty serenity of this unique stretch of shoreline.

A Year-Round Coastal Playground
Thanks to its mild climate, Pismo State Beach is ideal year-round for outdoor fun—camping, surfing, swimming, fishing, and bird watching. For off-roaders like us, it also connects directly to Oceano Dunes SVRA, one of the last places in California where you can legally drive on the beach.
Just inland, the Oceano Lagoon offers peaceful walking trails and freshwater habitats rich with birdlife. The Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center offers free educational materials, interactive displays, and a friendly staff that is ready to answer questions.

During the cooler months (November through February), the nearby Pismo Monarch Butterfly Grove becomes a magical haven filled with thousands of Western Monarch Butterflies. It’s a stunning seasonal sight and a reminder of the ecological treasure this region represents.

Sand Dollars and Sealife Galore
As we strolled along the tide line, we were amazed at the variety of sealife that had washed ashore or made a home in the sand. Sand dollars were everywhere—some whole, some cracked, many encrusted with barnacles hitching a ride. We spotted mussels clustered in dark bundles, gooseneck barnacles, spiny sand crabs, a flurry of shorebirds, and yes—even a few Pismo Clams, for which the area is famous.
One friendly State Park staffer explained that barnacles attach to the top of sand dollar shells as a form of natural transportation, helping them reach new feeding areas with the help of the ocean’s currents.

Driving the Shoreline (Responsibly)
We hopped in our 4×4 pickup and headed south along the beach into Oceano Dunes SVRA, where beach driving is still permitted at a posted 15 MPH limit within the tidal lines. There’s something surreal about rolling your tires through wet sand with waves on one side and campers on the other. Of course, if you’re set up for it, you can drive right to the sand dunes from the beach camping area and play to your heart’s content.

Note: While camping is not allowed within Pismo State Beach itself, beach camping is permitted in designated areas of the SVRA. But a word of caution—stay well above the tide line! The ocean doesn’t care how nice your RV is, and a quick online search will show you just how many folks get caught off guard by the changing tides.

Sandcastles for Fun
We lucked out and caught the 2nd Annual Pismo State Beach Sandcastle Competition, hosted by State Parks. It was a blast watching families and friends sculpt impressive sand creations throughout the morning. From imaginative sea creatures to classic castles, the beach became a living art gallery of coastal creativity.
Sandcastle competition! We loved this serpent in the sand.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand along the tide line, watching the birds flit through the surf, or carefully navigating your 4×4 along the surf line, Pismo Beach offers something rare and wonderful—a taste of old-school California coastal freedom, where nature and recreation still find a way to live side by side.
This trip reminded us of the importance of protecting and caring for places like Pismo Beach and Oceano Dunes, where access, education, and stewardship all work in harmony. We’re grateful for the chance to explore it, and we’ll be back.
