The Last Run

I WAS somewhere below the knob on Horizon Ridge, midway through a long solo slog from the Ostrander Ski Hut in Yosemite last spring, dogged by deep slush, mud, a too-heavy pack and a hopelessly broken binding. It was late in the afternoon, with at least five miles yet to go, when I finally realized: the end of ski season was no longer merely nigh, but hard upon me.

Tragedy strengthens camaraderie, resiliency of runners

WHEN I MAKE AN ONLINE PURCHASE to replenish leader, fly-tying materials or new fly line, I imagine rivers and forests. I’m happy.

But Monday night it was hard to be giddy after completing my order, especially if the channel was turned to one of the many stations re-reporting the bombing in Boston.

Five Stages of a Fisherman's Life

WHILE WINTERS IN SUN VALLEY are famous for skiing, there’s also a growing following for its more watery pursuits. Fly fishing during the winter in Sun Valley can be downright spectacular.

That’s why it’s becoming more common to hear folks après skiing at places like Grumpy's, the Mule Shoe or The Pioneer talking about pulling winter “double headers:” fly fishing on the Big Wood River and skiing (alpine, Nordic or snowboarding) on the same glorious day in the heart of Idaho.

Mountain Majesty

RIDING UP MAMMOTH Mountain’s Eagle Express chairlift, I take in the panoramic views and the early morning spring sunshine.

As I look out at the snowcapped Sherwin Range and Mammoth Crest—the sweeping ridge that forms part of the rim of the Mammoth Lakes Basin—I’m invigorated by the rugged beauty. Still untouched by skiers, the freshly groomed trails on the mountain sparkle in the sun.
