Game & Fish Magazine
EDITORIAL GUIDELINES
Game & Fish, a Primedia Company, publishes 30 state- or region-specific magazines monthly, all designed to provide hunters and anglers with practical articles about where, when and how to enjoy the best hunting and fishing opportunities in their state.
EDITORIAL FORMAT
Game & Fish articles fall into two categories:
-- State-specific stories run in only one magazine and contain information unique to a single state. These articles tend to focus on a single species and the best places to hunt or fish for that species, and often feature local experts. The very large majority of articles we publish offer specific where-to information and local tactics that work during the month the article comes out. We do not publish “me and Joe” stories or stories that take a historical look at hunting/fishing. Because of their quantity, state-specific topics represent the greatest opportunity for free-lance sales. Queries should be mailed to the editor of the appropriate magazine.
-- Multi-state stories, also called regional stories, appear in two or more magazines, and are much more limited in quantity than our state-specific slots. These topics mainly consist of how-to information, regional game or fish management topics, humor or true adventure.
QUERIES
We prefer queries rather than unsolicited manuscripts. Submit seasonal topics at least eight months in advance. Before querying, you should familiarize yourself with any Game & Fish magazine you target. (Sample copies are available for $3.50 with pre-addressed, stamped envelope.) Queries are not returned unless they include photos or a pre-addressed, stamped envelope. Check with individual editors before e-mailing queries.
All articles are either 1,500 or 2,500 words. That word count includes any sidebars. For example, a 1,500-word article with a 300-word sidebar would have a total word count of 1,800 words, 300 more than the assigned 1,500. Selected articles are included on our Web site, and an additional payment is made for those articles.
RIGHTS AND PAYMENT
Game & Fish purchases First North American Serial Rights to articles and one-time rights to photographs. We also purchase non-exclusive electronic rights to selected articles. Payments are mailed two months prior to the publication date. We pay separately for photographs and manuscripts, so it is to the author’s advantage to provide photos.
Our manuscript payments are: State-specific (1,500 words) — $150; State-specific (2,500 words) — $200; Multi-state (1,500 words) — $225; Multi-state (2,500 words) — $275. We pay an additional $25 for online use. National expansion rates are $250 (1,500 words) and $300 (2,500 words).
